Siksikaitsitapi Agriculture Conference

Agriculture is a way of life!

The conference, with its Siksikaitsitapi focus, aims to build a bridge from the Blackfoot distant and more recent past with the current Nitsitaapi Agriculture program and Red Crow College-based education program to:

  • Foster the uptake of Indigenous-led agricultural education and to encourage Blackfoot community members to engage in agricultural production in order to provide future employment and income opportunities while also increasing food supply and security in the community.

  • Promote Agribusiness or land economy on the reserve.

  • Create partnerships with industry experts to connect with Red Crow Community College's agriculture program.

  • Going forward, this may require new strategies (i.e., seed collection, drought and animal protection) and the development of progressive Indigenous agricultural systems. In that respect, we aim to provide speaking opportunities to experts from other First Nations, academia, conservationists and producers, to showcase their ideas and practices, and to offer opportunities for knowledge sharing and support to the Blackfoot Confederacy.

  • The conference this year starts with a pre-conference bison harvest. The conference is thematically represented: Meat, Plants and Food Production.
