Thea - Haudenosaunee Kanien’kehá:ka

Biography
Thea, a Haudenosaunee Kanien’kehá:ka designer from Kahnawake Mohawk Territory, shapes her practice with a foundation of craftsmanship. Thea was introduced to textile weaving in 2017 through a series of workshops given to indigenous youth at the Smithsonian in New York City. This propelled her to pursue academics in fibre arts at Alberta University of the Arts where she later earned her BFA majoring in craft and emerging media in 2023. Currently, Thea designs garments and accessories that fuse subtle traditional Haudenosaunee craft elements with contemporary streetwear forms to address the importance and relevance of traditional culture within the context of our modern world. She works with the intention of creating pieces that can become a dialogue for the longevity of culture and adaptation of identity. Thea has shown her work in Akwesasne Mohawk Territory, across Treaty 6 and Treaty 7 territories, and internationally at Native Fashion Week Santa Fe 2025.
